Dabujiang Patchwork Embroidery

Dabujiang Patchwork Embroidery, developed from traditional needlework, is a kind of embroidery in which small pieces of cloth of different colours or designs are sewn together and has strong folk characteristics of southern Hunan. It is so named because it is mainly distributed in Dabujiang Township, Yongxing County.

The embroidered products cover all traditional daily necessities, including baby products like bibs as well as bellybands, and adult products such as headscarves, aprons, pillowcases, and quilt covers. Besides, it has a full composition and exaggerated forms with patterns mostly being flowers, birds, insects, animals, auspicious pictures and folk tales. 
 
An embroidered work needs to be made through multiple processes. There are dozens of needle techniques for stitching and embellishment. 
 
In 2009, Dabujiang Patchwork Embroidery was included on the second representative list of municipal-level intangible cultural heritage items. In 2012, it was added to the second batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items.
